First big project in the new house

Sorry for the long blog absence. We recently moved back to the U.S. from Japan and have been busy getting settled. We were in serious need of some furniture but were not thrilled with how much everything cost. Thanks to the incredibly talented Ana over at http://www.knock-offwood.com/ we were able to build this entire office storage wall for less than $600!

We did modify the plans slightly to use the wall space that we had available. Our piece is 8 ft. wide and 6 ' 3" tall. The bottom left is a shelf unit and the bottom right is 4 file drawers.
As you can see this has become Matt's "man" wall. He did need one space in the house to call his own ;)
The plans are very good over at Ana's sight, but it was quite a challenge and took more time than we expected. We are really pleased with how well it turned out.

  9. I love this piece! What a great job you did! I am also looking to build something similar. I noticed you wrote that you modified this piece to fit your wall space. Did you make it larger or smaller? And what parts did you modify? Thanks for your reply. Great job!

  10. Hi Clarissa, hope you check back here since I couldn't send you a message directly.

We made the piece differently in many ways. We did not use a file base on each side of the desk but rather put 2 side by side on one side of the desk. Then we used the original base cabinet on the left. The hutches are the same size as the plans however our bridge is longer. We made our desktop bigger so the bridge had to match. We also attached our desktop differently by building braces on the sides of the base cabinets that it could sit on. I made a brace system underneath it that I feel is more sturdy as well. Hope that helps!

  12. This really is quite sharp, I would have guessed Pottery Barn, as well! These types of projects *always* take longer to complete, but it looks like it was worth it!
